The Greatest Gift of All

The Story of the Twins Sue and Skippy

Meet Harper Ray

Hello, I hope you like my book. It reminds me of my childhood and family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.I have two brothers and two sisters. Their names are Bill, Skippy, Mary Ann and Sue. We sure had a lot of fun. We'd play games like tag, hide and seek and ride through the fields on a sled pulled by our mule Alex.

We also liked to swing on an old car tire Dad tied with a rope to a big oak tree branch. In the summer we'd go swimming in the creek behind our house and sometimes make ice cream. We lived in an old farmhouse with a big hay barn and had chickens and a milk cow named Bessie. We didn't have electricity or plumbing so we used a fireplace to keep warm, oil lamps for light and a wood burning stove to cook and heat water. Our house didn't have a bathroom or bathtub. When we had to use the restroom we'd go to the outhouse. This was a wooden shed outside with a toilet and door for privacy. When it was time for our bath Mom would pour hot water in a big round metal bucket. These were called wash tubs and came in different sizes. We used one that each of us could fit in one at a time. Our pastor's name was Preacher Snow. Sunday and Wednesday we would dress our best and go to church. We read the bible, prayed, sung hymns and talked to neighbors and friends. We had a great time.We might not have had much, but we had each other and Jesus. That made us spiritually rich. There but for the grace of God go I.
